Root Canals

A root canal therapy is a procedure whereby the pulp is removed from the affected tooth and is sealed. The pulp is the deep part of the tooth that contains blood vessels and nerves. It is situated in the central part of the root and connects, from the root canals, the tooth with the bone.

You may need a root canal if the root is irreversibly infected or dead. This could be caused by trauma, decay, or insufficient restoration. In many cases, it does not hurt, but the lesion has already affected the nerve irreversibly.

On the first appointment, you will be given local anaesthesia, and then we will proceed with the opening of the tooth to access the damaged pulp and root canals. First, we will remove the pulp tissue, clean it, and widen the conducts with the adequate equipment. Then, we will place a medication inside the conducts and let it take effect during one week.

In the second appointment, the conducts are sealed perfectly with a thermoplastic material (guttapercha) and cement. Once this is done, the tooth is prepared to be restored. The tooth with the root canal treatment can then be restored with fillings or may require the placement of a post and crown.
